Rex Burkhead was born in Winchester, Kentucky. He attended Plano Senior High School in Plano, Texas, where he played high school football for the Wildcats.

He committed to the University of Nebraska to play college football. During his freshman year, he played in nine games, rushing for 346 yards on 81 carries with three touchdowns.

After three-and-a-half years at the university, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history. Throughout his collegiate career, he earned repeated scholar-athlete awards, including first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2011 and 2012.
